In a study conducted by Amie L. Nielsen, Scott Bonn, and George Wilson, entitled Racial Prejudice and Spending on Drug Rehabilitation: The Role of Attitudes Toward Blacks and Latinos, the researchers measured the attitudes of Whites on Blacks and Latinos. The research aimed to expound upon the topic of prejudice based on "racial coding," specifically using spending on drug rehabilitation as a mode of getting the answers. The study assessed two different types of racial prejudice, modern prejudice and traditional prejudice. Modern prejudice is defined more as the stereotypes and generalizations that others give to groups in which there is no factual basis. Traditional prejudice is incorporates the idea of not wanting to be within a residential proximity as well as being against interracial marriage. The data was collected using the General Social Survey. Results showed that there was a linkage between modern and traditional prejudice and drug rehabilitation training. The results are consistent with color coding.
In the study conducted by Alana Rosenberg, Allison K. Groves, and Kim M. Blankenship, entitled Comparing Black and White Drug Offenders: Implications for Racial Disparities in Criminal Justice and Reentry Policy and Programming, the researchers wanted to see the differences in how Blacks and Whites were treated as offenders of drug related crimes. They compared 243 black and white non-violent drug offenders, 40% being white and 60% being black. The researchers used surveys to find their data. It was found that Blacks were significantly more likely to have sales and possession charges, prefer marijuana as their choice drug, as well as less likely to report serious drug problems.
Both of these studies used surveys to find their data and compared the differences between ethnic groups. The two studies also showed forms of prejudice against Blacks relating to drugs. It is interesting to note that in the first study, there was a prejudice shown by whites against blacks and latinos in reference to drug rehabilitation and in the second study, it was shown that more whites were found doing drug related crimes than blacks, yet blacks were more often convicted for the same crimes. These two studies can support each other by making the connection that the same people who have prejudice against blacks and latinos getting more funding for rehabilitation, could help contribute to blacks, who are the minority, being more likely to be convicted of a crime that more whites commit.
